Wardrobe Staple: The T-Shirt Dress

Wardrobe Staple: The T-Shirt Dress

Happy hump day 🙂 I am hoping to eventually do a post that lists the top wardrobe essentials for your closet, but for now let’s just discuss one: The T-shirt dress. The T-shirt dress has primarily been considered a “menswear inspired” piece. Just like “Boyfriend” jeans, it was meant to create the aesthetic of wearing a casual loose fitting t-shirt that looked as though you were borrowing it from a man’s closet due to it’s over-sized nature that allows you to wear it as a dress. Honestly, this back story clearly only fits one narrative and lifestyle but the original shirtdress gained popularity in the 1950s (I think due to Christian Dior, don’t quote me) so that puts thing more into perspective.

Nonetheless, t-shirt dresses are one of my favorite wardrobe essentials. Depending on how you accessorize it or the shoes you choose to wear, a t-shirt dress can be the perfect outfit for several occasions. For this instance, I wore this t-shirt dress by Etienne Marcel with Tony Bianco heels for a day out and about in Coral Gables. However, I also dressed it down a bit for a Bridal Shower, in which I wore it with gladiator sandals.
